Total Factor Productivity of the Japanese National Railways
Based on the "3T" Activities

Abstract

The Japanese National Railways(JNR), which was restructured and divided into one freight and six regional passenger railroad companies in 1987, can be called a treasury of data. JNR's internal record can provide precise numbers of input and output according to activity. In this paper we specially aim at the most accurate total factor productivity measurement concerning "3T" major activities of railroad industry; railroad Tracks, operation of Trains, and passenger & freight Transportation. The empirical results are expected to prodive basic information about the characteristics of Japan's railroad industry for the process of future deregulation.
